Linkia study page 6

Who would have thought that such a tiny little snail could have done so much damage?  At this point, I'm not sure that the starfish was the only thing that this snail has been feeding on.  Considering where the opening was on the starfish, and how close to that hole the foot of the snail sat, knowing it was moving around in there....anything is possible.

Here we have the hollowed out arm.  At this point I have used the pin and tweezers to remove all soft tissue that would come out easily.

The blue arrow points to the hole.

The red arrow points to the hollowed our round (lump) where the snail laid.

Anything that shows up here with a yellow tint to it is fragments of the snail flesh.  It looks smooth, but in fact, each piece was a small "chunk" that lifted out of a grove, but not easily.

Outlined in green is what remained of the starfish flesh.

Outlined in blue are the "chunks" of snail flesh.

From another angle, the red arrow points to the starfish flesh and the blue arrows point to the remains of the snail.

I want to thank you for your time in following my study.  This was a very educational experience for me and for my co workers.  I hope it was for you, too.  My hopes are that in posting this, maybe it will help someone else with the same problem.  With the difficulty in diagnosing the problem, by the people I know are expert in the field, I thought it only fair that we all share in the answers to the big mystery.  There are still questions remaining, questions that we can never know the answers to......thus is the way of the underwater world.....an eternal mystery!
